Artist Statement

Paul Banham
Contemporary Modern Artist

I am an artist living and painting by the coast in the North West of England. I paint modern landscapes using the architectural structure of nature combined with remote viewing from memory to form a fusion of the conscious and unconscious.

I use a meditational approach to my work which involves becoming one with the painting. This way my own conscious awakens and opens me up freely to paint, because I fuse the images from memory with the images that one experiences whilst in a state of déjà vu. I call this technique remote viewing scapes. Like the mind in Buddhism in a state of Samadhi everything becomes one. This is what I try to paint one moment.

In my most recent work, I have been attempting new techniques, which involve applying paint and oil to the canvas using pallet knives, brushes and cloths to create a glacial finish, as I feel the surface is as important to the painting as the image.

The imagery in my recent paintings is aquatic, lots of tones of blues and greens which I consider are affected by deep emotions and there is also a sense of angst and fight with the deepest tones of red, orange and purple. Sometimes both forces collide into an explosion of the two. This is when it is most exciting for me. I know I have been to my landscapes but not necessarily in this life.
